The stretch choli is a modern interpretation of the traditional choi blouse worn under the sari by Indian women.

In some parts of India cholis are backless and held in place by narrow ties. The open back is usually covered with a long veil. These cholis are made of woven fabrics, often elaborately decorated.

As Tribal dance styles became popular in the bellydance community, costumers began to experiment with various garments inspired by the closely fitted, backless choli, incorporating modern western style elements and fabrics, and the need for garments that would move easily during the dance. One of the most successful variations was that of stretch fabric, and the garment known as a stretch choli was born.

Our choli pattern as a deep "V" neckline and an open back. It fastens with ties at the upper back neck and underbust band. A fisheye dart across the center front holds the fabric close to the body, and a separate pattern piece for sizes D-DD cups (D-E in European sizing) has lower darts to accommodate the fuller bustline. Sleeves can be cut short, elbow, or wrist length and an optional "cold shoulder" version is included.
