The under-most garment that was basic to women of the colonial, civil war and fur trade eras was the Woman's Chemise. This could serve as both an undergarment and nightgown but was also called a shift or smock and used as a dress for every day use. Traditionally made of fine linen, silk or cotton, the Chemise has a gathered scooped neckline and gathers either above or below the elbows. The inclusion of tucks or gathers on the sleeves and gussets under the arms are construction details similar to men's shirts of this time period.

This pattern, with drawstrings in the neckline and sleeves, can be made in solid fabric for use as an undergarment. Or, it may be made of calico, worn with a belt and used as a dress as was common in historic days. Lace may be added to the neckline and sleeves and a ruffle to the bottom of the skirt.
