~ Item for sale is a sewing pattern, not a finished garment ~
Since the early 1700s, the Seminole Indians of Florida have experimented with the brightly colored fabrics first brought to them by European traders. The form of patchwork that now bears their name goes back to about 1910, when their introduction to hand-cranked sewing machines encouraged ever more intricate piecing of the bands of fabric used for long full jackets, skirts, and capes. In the 1920s, the Seminole women began selling these garments to tourists, a cottage industry that continues to this day.
This pattern includes a blouson-style jacket worn by Seminole men since the 1940s (sized by Folkwear for men and women) and a simple dirndl skirt with dust ruffle for women. Authentic Seminole patchwork designs and instructions are included.
The jacket front, back, and sleeves are all rectangular pieces pleated into a rectangular shoulder yoke, wide cuffs, and dropped waistband. A simple turned back collar is set into the collarband. Collarband, cuffs, and plain front placket close with buttons.
The original construction of this jacket requires the same length of sleeves and body, since it is cut from a length of fabric made out of plain and patched strips. You may wish to line the inside of the jacket, although this is not traditional.
The full dirndl skirt is gathered into a waistband that buttons at the side; the dust ruffle and/or tuck at the hem are optional.
